Ageing Skin

A large number of people suffer from dehydrated skin, in fact up to 98% of the population, although it is more common in women than in men.

Skin ageing is a natural process, which people fear but ultimately have to accept. The first signs of ageing visibly reflect on our skin. Pevonia Botanica however believes that by using good quality products and incorporating the right ingredients, you can turn back the hands of time. The Pevonia philosophy is preventive maintenance for the skin.

More and more pressure is placed upon us to look younger for longer. With so many products claiming all sorts of myths, it is no wonder we don’t know which way to turn, who we should believe. Millions of pounds are spent on creams that offer false promises, and just can’t deliver on the dream of eternal youth.
Pevonia is passionate about good skincare. Founder Sylvie Hennessy has dedicated her life to scientific research, never compromising, always researching for the latest ingredients to deliver on that long-lost promise.
Pevonia Botanica offers nature’s purest, holistic botanical and marine extracts, combined with the latest ingredients, manufactured using the most technologically-advanced formulations to deliver outstanding visible results.

1. How does the skin function?
Skin is the largest organ of the body, it is there for protection. It is known as an excretory organ, and excretes sweat and sebum. One square inch (which could be as thin as 1mm) will contain approximately: 650 glands, some of which produce sebum to lubricate the skin and assist the prevention of moisture evaporation, keeping the skin hydrated and smooth. 19 yards of blood vessels, bringing nature’s life source, oxygen, to the cells, providing essential energy to function and remove waste. 75 yards of nerves and thousands of nerve endings responsible for sensation and movement.

The skin is made up of three main structures:
1. Epidermis
2. Dermis
3. Subcutaneous

The epidermis has three principal functions:
1. Protecting the body from the environment, particularly the sun.
2. Preventing excessive water loss from the body.
3. Protecting the body from infection.

The epidermis consists of 5 layers. Starting at the bottom is the basal layer where cells reproduce and subdivide, containing approximately 80% moisture and is responsible for healthy, youthful skin. From this layer the cells move upwards over a 28 day period (however this process slows down with the ageing phenomenon). These cells go through a process called keratinisation, which means they harden and flatten to provide a protective top layer which acts as a barrier preventing easy absorption of substances. Remember the skin is not designed to absorb; it is an excretory organ, designed to protect.

Functions of The dermis include:
1. Protection to the body from bumps and knocks; the collagen has an important role in this function.
2. Providing oxygen and nutrients, via blood in the tiny vessels that run in the ground substance, to the living part of the epidermis.
3. Removing waste products of metabolism from the epidermis, which are also carried away in the blood.
4. Providing shape and form to the body, by holding all its structures together.
5. Contributing to skin colour, particularly in people with little melanin in the epidermis.

Organs in the dermis have special functions of their own:
1. Regulation of body temperature through control of blood flow and sweating.
2. Skin sensations of touch, pain, heat and cold.

The dermis is found under the epidermis. The dermis has many functions, including the maintenance of the skin's "scaffolding", collagen, which in a healthy skin can constitute up to 70% of the skin's mass. The dermis supplies the skin with the nutrients it needs, including oxygen via the blood. In the dermis you will also find a substance called Hyaluronic acid, which is commonly referred to as a moisture bond, with the ability to hold a thousand times its own weight in water.

The Subcutaneous connects the dermis to the muscle and acts as a shock absorber to cushion the vessels and nerve endings.

2. What factors lead to ageing?
Skin goes through significant changes during your 30s, and pores tend to become more visible around nose, chin and apples of cheeks, even though skin may be dry in appearance. Fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable, becoming deeper, and may even become prone to red blotchiness and uneven pigmentation. As we age there is generally insufficient production of sebum, combined with patches of dehydration on cheeks and forehead. The complexion can look dull and dehydrated, and has a tendency for broken capillaries around nose and cheeks; skin can appear loose especially under eyes and along the jaw line.

External factors which can lead to premature ageing:
1. UV and sun exposure
2. Environmental pollutions
3. Extreme climate changes
4. Low grade skincare products
5. Poor diet
6. Excessive alcohol consumption
7. Smoking

Internal factors which can lead to premature ageing:
1. Repetitive facial expression
2. Hereditary factors
3. Sleep deprivation
4. Stress
5. Hormones

Normal skin function decreases as we get older, particularly moisture levels and collagen production. To counteract this process we must increase moisture levels deep within the skin.

3) What ingredients/treatments are best suited to treat anti-ageing
To treat an ageing skin, Pevonia opts for ingredients which help to regenerate the skin, and stimulate the internal cellular exfoliation process to encourage it to mimic the action of a younger skin. Pevonia uses many ingredients which have an anti-free radical action. A lot of people underestimate the effect of free radical damage on their skin. We have approximately 60 trillion cells in our body and we are subject to 1,000 oxidative attacks per cellular DNA. As we age our internal defence mechanisms are not as effective as those of a younger skin and therefore to add anti-free radicals into a skincare preparation is vital.
People who invest in a professional treatment programme of facials in conjunction with the recommended home care regime can expect to take ten years off the way they look.

4) what action can we take as preventative measures
A correct PEVONIA skincare regime can help to slow the ageing process by accelerating the cellular renewal process, maintaining the skin at an optimal level for longer. Turn back the hands of time using effective treatments and home care by Pevonia Botanica.
