Clary sage Hydrolat

Salvia sclarea, although a fairly small plant when grown in damp British soil, can actually grow to be about five feet tall in southern France. It is a hairy plant with beautiful, gladioli-like flowers of pink, cream, mauve and pale green. The actual flower head can be as long as 18 inches. The plant aroma is evident when one is standing close by and is reminiscent of snuff. The hydrolat, traditionally taken from the distillation of the flower head, leaves and stalk, is commonly used in southern France as a facial wash for oily skin. The hydrolat helps to improve the skin colour and tone, while helping to regulate sebum.

In Germany, Clary has been used as an adulterant to improve poor wine by infusion. Clary imparts a muscatel flavour to wine and enhances the effect.

The main components of the hydrolat when analysed suggest that the hydrolat of Clary is anti-infectious, antiviral, bactericidal, decongestant and stimulating. This is attributed to the various alcohol molecules that make up between 11 and 49%. There are also between 3 and 79% of esters, which suggests the hydrolat is also antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, calming and uplifting.

Price (2004:140) states that as a gargle, Clary hydrolat can help relieve a sore throat. It is also able to balance hormones and is beneficial for easing PMS and period pain - if taken for 10 days before menstruation. Clary is also useful taken daily through the last 3 weeks of pregnancy to help prepare the uterus for labour. Later, in the menopause, it is an effective aid against hot flushes and anxiety.

For the skin
Clary hydrolat is astringent and antiseptic, making it suitable for acne and oily type skins. Drench a thick piece of gauze with the hydrolat and lay over the thoroughly cleansed face. Leave for up to 45 minutes and then apply moisture cream.

To help with menopause
Add up to 100ml to the bath water twice a week. Drink 10mls diluted with water 3 times a day to help with hormonal balance and hot flushes. Used in a spritzer with peppermint hydrolat, Clary can help with hot flushes and blushing.

As a mood enhancer
Take 10mls in water several times a day and use in a spritzer around the room for a relaxed environment. The hydrolat can also be used in a vaporiser.
